Number 4 in the series of Public Information leaflets published before the outbreak of war, Your Food in War-time explained the roles of both the government and the ordinary consumer in the supply and consumption of food. Householders were urged to maintain a weeks supply of foods such as tinned meat, flour, dried milk, sugar, tea and biscuits. Traders were encouraged to increase stocks in case food distribution was disrupted, as well as to meet increased demand in those areas receiving evacuees.
The leaflet reveals how the Ministry of Food had also been busy. For the past 18 months it had been stockpiling essential foods and preparing plans for rationing, a sign that war was only a short time away.
