The Defence Medal was awarded to those who served in the defence of Britain on home soil (a different medal was given to those who served overseas).
The obverse shows a portrait of King George VI with an abbreviated Latin inscription which can be translated as GEORGE VI, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, KING OF ALL BRITAIN, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH, EMPEROR OF INDIA.
