Civilian Life

Land at War book

Far from the cities where the evidence of war was all around, the countryside seemed very remote from the front line – at least superficially. In fact the war effort was as intense here as elsewhere, driven by the desperate need to feed a nation while keeping imported food to a minimum. Published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Land at War tells the story of how British farming adapted to meet the enormous challenges of a wartime economy.
