This wartime edition of The Famous Book of Herbs by Heath & Heather Ltd was mailed to a resident near Ripon in the summer of 1941. Essentially it is a sales catalogue promoting the health benefits of an extensive range of plants. Some have probably been long forgotten, while others are now being rediscovered by a new generation.
Some products were especially intended to meet the needs of wartime customers. These included The Webflex anti-concussion bandeau to protect against the shock of nearby explosions, kola nut pills to calm anxiety and insomnia herbs to help you sleep through almost anything.
Not only were health benefits claimed for English herb tea, no ration coupons were needed!
This page features gifts for men and women. Despite wartime austerity, there was still room for a little luxury.
