Made in their millions, the standard British helmet provided protection not only for the armed forces but for many civilians carrying out official duties. The black paint and the letter W indicate that this one belonged to an Air Raid Warden.
The owner of this helmet (a different example from the one above) has attached his soldiers identity tag to the chinstrap by a chain.
