With the threat of invasion having vanished by the end of 1944, it was decided to disband the Home Guard. In recognition of its service to the nation, a ceremonial parade was organised for the afternoon of 3rd December at Hyde Park in London. Seven thousand members of the Home Guard were expected to take part.
Later that evening a Stand-Down party was held at the Royal Albert Hall for Home Guard members only. Tommy Trinder and Vera Lynn were among the entertainers.
