Air Raid Precautions letter

This letter was sent by North Riding County Council to householders in an effort to organise temporary shelter for evacuees during enemy air raids. They were asked to make arrangements with a friend or relative living at least a quarter of a mile away, so that if one home had to be evacuated, the other would provide accommodation. Included was a Householder’s Record Card, which was to be completed and returned to the appropriate Air Raid Warden’s Post.

As part of these arrangements, householders were also advised to deposit a parcel of spare clothing and copies of important documents (such as War Savings Certificates) with their friend or relative. Measures like these helped reduce the strain on the civil defence services at a time when they could expect to be stretched to the limit.
